Bio

Sean Ahrens is the co-creator of Crohnology— an online social health-tracking network for people living with Crohn's or Colitis. Crohnology is a Y-Combinator-funded startup he cofounded with college-friend Will Cole. Sean's goal is to connect the world's patients (of all conditions) in a massive, patient-centered data-sharing network, which he believes will serve as the future model for how we practice medicine. Sean and his three-person team work out of San Francisco, CA.

Crohnology allows patients from around the world to connect and learn from the knowledge and data of other patients. Crohnology has over 2,000 patients in 40 different countries of the world. Patients can find others near them locally (and meet up), track their own health via their smartphone, share knowledge through questions and answers, and learn from infographics of population data. There are currently over 11,000 treatment reviews on Crohnology, and 4,000 answers to questions.

Sean was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at age 12. At age 19, Sean discovered the value of connecting to other patients—for sharing support, but more importantly, for sharing knowledge. Armed with a group of patients and patient knowledge, Sean went on a quest to connect and spread patient knowledge to as many as possible across the globe. Sean saw that if you could take a stream of structured patient narratives (a stream of the user's health and the treatments they did) and combine them into one massive global whole, you could open up a whole new way of learning and practicing medicine. The software behind Crohnology is that vision, in action.

Prior to Crohnology, Sean was the cofounder of YC-funded MessageParty , and prior to that, User Experience Designer for Votizen, a voter-to-voter social network working to take money out of politics.

Sean studied Computer Science and Entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley . He served as Creative Director of Berkeley Innovation, UC Berkeley's Product Design Club. While an undergrad, he built an internal social network for his residential organization, and in high school, he developed and published a series of productivity and gaming apps for the TI-83+ calculator. In middle school (1999), Sean deployed his first website, a blog for his school. Today, Sean enjoys programming in Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Sean lives in the Mission District of San Francisco. He does not ride a fixie. Sean enjoys exploring the great outdoors, sunshine, music festivals, and bodies of water. He holds a private pilot license for single-engine aircraft. Sean has a personal website he rarely keeps up to date.
